Sunrise On Stawamus
There are few people who would say yes to a 3am morning. Let alone a 3am morning to Hike up a boulder filled, steep ascent to watch the sunrise. The odd few; however, would join even though the sand under they're eyelids protest. So we drag ourselves out of the sheets after only a few hours of rest to drive to the trailhead. Eager but wishing to still be in bed. Headlights on, jackets zipped up we head up the chief, long before the droves of tourists flood the trail.
Half way up ( we Guessed ) we stopped, having no visible reference points to tell exactly how close we where to the top. Lost the main trail once. Tripped over the odd root and scrambled up the ladders and rocks. The glow of sunrise hanging in the sky behind us, street lights of Squamish still glowing, roads empty.
It was just us and the rock. Just us and the sunrise. It was like a new world, having been up there at the peak of tourist season, days of blinding sun and days of fog and rain. But the light, the quiet, the stillness was so different.
We bask in the sunlight. Nap on the cool rocks. The early rise was worth every tired step up this monolith.
